Livestock Show and Sale - 2007
 

2007 Livestock Guidelines

  1. Hancock 4-H members are eligible to show and sell in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair. Youth in 4-H programs in surrounding counties are eligible if they complete all the Hancock 4-H requirements.

  2. All pigs, poultry, market goats, and market rabbits shown in the fair are market animals and are terminal. No market animals are permitted to return to the farm. All market animals will be slaughtered.

  3. Beef feeder calves, dairy heifers, dairy goats and breeding rabbits are breeding animals and will return to the farm after the fair.

  4. All livestock should be fed appropriate, commercial or farm-ground livestock feed. Animals must be wormed and be in good condition to show. Any undesirable animals will not be allowed to remain on the fairgrounds.

  5. All livestock health guidelines in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair exhibit guide will be followed. Animals that cross the state line must have appropriate health papers according to the exhibit guide.

  6. Appropriate attire for the show will be short sleeved appropriate shirt (not t-shirt), nice jeans (long) and hard shoes (not tennis shoes). Members showing poultry are to wear a white short sleeved shirt and white jeans.

  7. Youth should provide their own waterers. Water will be available at the livestock tent on the fairgrounds.

  8. All youth are expected to participate in their showmanship class. First place trophy will be given in each division. Ribbon placings will be given in each division.

  9. Livestock and poultry can be brought to the fairgrounds anytime between 1-7pm on Thursday. Weigh-in for pigs will be held at 7pm on Thursday night. Weigh-in for poultry will be on Friday at 8:30am.

  10. Important Dates: All youth and one adult must attend the following Hancock 4-H activities:
    1. Must be a member of Hancock 4-H by January 1.
    2. Thursday, May 10 at 6-8pm (Quality Assurance and Ethics)
    3. Wednesday, June 27 (10am-4:30pm) or Thursday, June 28(10am-4:30pm) or by appointment. Skillathon competition for youth and adults. Livestock project books and activity records are judged during these two days and will be returned to the 4-H member.
    4. Friday, September 14 at 7pm All livestock project member records and cost estimations/actual record turned in. Sunday, September 16 by 4pm. All thank you cards completed and turned in.

Livestock sale

  1. The livestock sale will begin at 5pm on Saturday, September 15. The sale order will be as follows: Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, Overall showmanship and class winners followed by second place, third place, etc. in the classes. Poultry, rabbits, then pigs will sell. No feeder calves, dairy heifers or breeding animals will be sold.

  2. All youth are expected to contact 5 potential buyers for each of their market animals or pens. Each exhibitor should provide their list of personal contacts to the livestock committee.

  3. Add-ons will be accepted on behalf of the youth by the livestock committee. No commission will be taken from the add-ons. Add-ons are money donated to the youth by a relative, business or group that is not purchasing the animal, but wants to help the youth build their education fund.

  4. The animals may be resold with the money going to a local charity. The first buyer determines where the money from the resold animal will be sent. Suggested organizations include Hancock 4-H, Fair Livestock Committee or Hancock County Oldtime Fairboard.

  5. All market animals will be transported to a local slaughter house for slaughter unless the buyer has made other arrangements for immediate slaughter with the livestock committee prior to the sale

  6. All buyers will pick up their meat at the slaughter house and pay the cut and wrap charges and kill charges directly to the slaughter house. Information will be provided to all buyers.

  7. Buyers will be expected to pay for the animals before they leave the sale. Checks will be made out to the Hancock Livestock Committee and will include a small transportation fee. Youth will be reimbursed by the Hancock Livestock Committee within two weeks of the fair.

  8. The livestock committee will receive a 5% commission on each animal that is sold. This money will help defray costs of the sale.

  9. Buyers will receive a picture of the youth and animal that they purchase for display in their business. Grand and reserve champion banners will be given to the buyers of those animals.

  10. A portion of your purchase may be tax deductible and Hancock 4-H will provide a receipt for your animal. Contact your tax advisor for more information.

SPECIFIC PIG GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H pig project and the 4-H Swine Record Guide - project code 1084. Pig projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Swine 1 and ending with Swine 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following pig projects are currently available: 1081 The Incredible Pig (Swine 1); 1082 Putting The Oink in Pig ( Swine 2); 1083 Going the Whole Hog (Swine 3). 4-H members are permitted a maximum of 2 pigs.

  1. The Livestock committee or Extension Agent will visit each farm as needed throughout the summer.

  2. Recommended market weight for pigs is 200-300 pounds. Youth may show and sell one or two market pigs. Both pigs will be housed in the same pen at the fairgrounds.

  3. Youth will provide their own bedding for pigs. Suggested bedding is wood chips or shavings or straw. All bedding must be removed when livestock are loaded into trailers at the end of the fair.

  4. If you need assistance with locating feeder pig producers, contact the Extension Office or Livestock Committee members.

  5. The deadline for registering all pigs for fair is May 26. Pigs will be tagged and weighed in that morning by the livestock committee at Tomlinson Run State Park. Pigs for the Hancock Fair cannot be tagged for any other fair or event.

  6. Showmanship classes will begin at 1pm on Saturday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

      1. Junior 9-11 years old

      2. Intermediate

      3. Senior

      4. Overall Showmanship (winners of each of the 3 showmanship classes compete)

  7. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the weight of pigs and the number of pigs that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.
SPECIFIC POULTRY GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H poultry project and the 4-H Poultry Record Guide- project code 11040. Poultry projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Poultry 1 and ending with Poultry 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following poultry projects are currently available: 1011 Scratching the Surface (Poultry 1); 1102 Testing your Wings ( Poultry 2); 1103 Flocking Together (Poultry 3). 4-H members are permitted a maximum of 10 chickens.

  1. All Poultry projects will start with a maximum of 10 broiler chicks. State Line Farm and Fab will sponsor chicks for those members who contact them directly. Youth will pick up their chicks and a bag of starter feed from State Line the third week of July or via special arrangements with Daneen Gamble. All chicks must follow the WV pullorum and vaccination regulations.

  2. All birds must be fed appropriate commercial or farm-ground feed.

  3. The Livestock Committee will provide pens for the birds while at the fairgrounds. Youth will provide waterers, feeders, feed and cooling if needed.

  4. Showmanship classes will begin at 10am on Saturday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

      1. Junior 9-11 years old

      2. Intermediate 12-13 years old

      3. Senior 14-19 years old
  5. Youth will show pens of two (up to three pens). The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest.

  6. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the weight of pens and the number of pens that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

SPECIFIC BEEF GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H beef project and its accompanied 4-H Beef Record Guide ( 10440 4-H Beef Heifer /Cow Record Guide and 10440 4-H Feeder Calf Record Guide) Beef projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Beef 1 and ending with Beef 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following beef projects are currently available: 1041 Bite into Beef ( Beef 1); 1042 Here’s the Beef ( Beef 2); 1043 Leading the Charge (Beef 3). Market steer projects cannot be shown in Hancock County due to lack of appropriate facilities, but could be shown at the WV State Fair. 4-H members are permitted a maximum of 2 calves.

  1. Feeder calves weighing no more than 500 pounds at the show will be shown. This guideline is for safety reasons

    more than weight reasons.
  2. All feeder calves must be registered by May 26. If the calf isn’t born yet, the intent to show the calf must be registered by May 26.

  3. Feeder calves can be purebred or crossbred animals.

  4. Showmanship classes will begin at 1pm on Sunday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

    1. Junior (9-13 years old as of the show)
    2. Senior (14-19 years old as of the show)
  5. The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the number of animals that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

SPECIFIC DAIRY GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Dairy project and the 4-H Dairy Record Guide 10540. Dairy projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Dairy 1 and ending with Dairy 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following dairy projects are currently available: 1051 Cowabunga ( Dairy 1); 1052 Mooving Ahead( Dairy 2); 1053 Rising to the Top (Dairy 3). 4-H members are permitted a maximum of 2 calves.

  1. Dairy heifer calves or yearlings will be shown only. Dairy Cow projects cannot be shown in Hancock County due to the lack of appropriate facilities, but could be shown at the WV State Fair.

  2. Dairy heifers should be purebred animals, but need not be registered.

  3. All dairy heifers must be entered for the fair by May 26.

  4. Showmanship classes will begin at 2:30pm on Sunday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

    1. Junior (9-13 years old as of the show)
    2. Senior (14-19 years old as of the show)
  5. The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the number of animals that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

SPECIFIC RABBIT GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Rabbit project and the 4-H Market Rabbit Record Guide 11240. Rabbit projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Rabbit 1 and ending with Rabbit 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following rabbit projects are currently available: 1121 What’s Hoppening? ( Rabbit 1); 1122 Making Tracks (Rabbit 2); 1123All Ears (Rabbit 3). There is no limit on rabbit projects.

  1. Breeding rabbits or Market rabbits will be shown.

  2. Rabbits can be purebred or crossbred animals.

  3. All rabbits must be entered in the fair by May 26.

  4. The Livestock Committee will provide pens for rabbits. Youth will provide waterers, feeders, feed and cooling if needed.

  5. Showmanship classes will begin at 2:30pm on Saturday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

    1. Junior 9-13 years old
    2. Senior 14-19 years old
  6. The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the number and breeds of animals that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

MARKET GOAT GUIDELINES:

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Market Goat project and the 4-H Goat Record Guide 1134 (Dairy/Meat). Market Goat projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Market Goat 1 and ending with Market Goat 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following goat projects are currently available: 1135 Just Browsing ( Meat Goat 1); 1136 Get Growing with Meat Goats ( Meat Goat 2); 1137 Meating the Future (Meat Goat 3).

  1. All goats must have a scrapie tag before exhibition at the fair.

  2. Exhibitor must have ownership by May 26.

  3. Goats must be born after January 1

  4. Goats must weigh 60-110 pounds at weigh-in.

  5. Goats may be does or wethers.

  6. Goats must carry all kid teeth and will be examined at weigh-in on Thursday night.

  7. All goats must have horns tipped. No sharp points will be allowed.

  8. Showmanship classes will begin at 3pm on Sunday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

    1. Junior (9-13 years old as of the show)
    2. Senior (14-19 years old as of the show)
  9. The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the number of animals that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

DAIRY GOAT GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Dairy Goat project and the 4-H Goat Record Guide 1134 (Dairy/Meat). Goat projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Goat 1 and ending with Goat 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following goat projects are currently available: 1131 Getting Your Goat (Dairy Goat 1); 1132 Stepping Out (Dairy Goat 2); 1133 Showing the Way (Dairy Goat 3).

  1. All goats must have a scrapie tag before exhibition at the fair.

  2. Exhibitor must have ownership by May 26.

  3. Goats must be born after January 1

  4. All goats must have horns tipped. No sharp points will be allowed.

  5. Showmanship classes will begin at 3:30pm on Sunday. Classes will be broken into these divisions:

    1. Junior (9-13 years old as of the show)
    2. Senior (14-19 years old as of the show)
  6. The show will begin immediately after the showmanship contest. Classes will be determined by the livestock committee based on the number of animals that show. A Grand and Reserve Champion will be named.

HORSE GUIDELINES:

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Horse project and the 4-H Horse Record Guide 10660. Horse projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Horse 1 and ending with Horse4. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following Horse projects are currently available: 1061 Giddy up and Go (Horse 1); 1062 Head, Heart, and Hooves (Horse 2); 1063 Stable Relationships (Horse 3); 1064 Riding the Range (Horse 4).

  1. Horse must have a current Coggins test and all vaccinations.

  2. Horse 4-H Judging will begin at 2pm on Sunday, September 16.

CAT GUIDELINES:

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Cat project and the 4-H Cat Record Guide 11540. Cat projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Cat 1 and ending with Cat 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following Cat projects are currently available: 1051 Purr-fect Pals (Cat 1); 1152 Climbing Up (Cat 2); 1153 Leaping Forward (Cat 3).

  1. All cats must be at least 6 months old for judging at the fair.

  2. Cat must be leashed or in a carry-all.

  3. Cats must be current on all vaccinations.

  4. Cat 4-H judging will begin at 5pm on Friday.

  5. Cats are eligible for the Hancock Fair Pet contest and parade. See the exhibit guide for details.

DOG GUIDELINES

All 4-H members participating in the Hancock County Oldtime Fair Livestock Show and Sale must have completed a 4-H Dog project and the 4-H Dog Record Guide 11140. Dog projects are to be taken in sequence, beginning with Dog 1 and ending with Dog 3. Each project will be taken for three consecutive years before proceeding to the next project. The following Dog projects are currently available: 1111 Wiggles and Wags (Dog 1); 1112Canine Connection (Dog 2); 1113 Leading the Pack (Dog 3).

  1. All dogs must be at least 6 months old for judging at the fair.

  2. Dogs must be leashed or in a carry-all.

  3. Dogs must be current on all vaccinations.

  4. Dog 4-H judging will begin at 5pm on Friday.

  5. Dogs are eligible for the Hancock Fair Pet contest and parade. See the exhibit guide for details.
